Curio Praxis

I like how Facebook boasts about how it’s new messaging system is “casual” as if its previous system was riddled with the formality of an aristocratic dinner on the verge of turning into a craze sex party but no one knows who is going to take their pants off first.  Although when I think about how Facebook communications usually turn out for me this new format might work after all.

So, about 2 hours ago I heard my cats begin to battle and then a noise that indicated catastrophe. I rushed out and saw that my laptop had been knocked from the countertop to the concrete floor about 3 feet away. There were scratches and bumps everywhere and a noticeable “bubble” on a corner where computer took most of it’s impact, pushing the casing in and popping the bottom panel out. I tried turning it back on but it got stuck on the startup screen.

I popped onto my iPad and made the soonest available Genius Bar appointment, in an hour’s time, and rushed to the mall. I arrived 30 minutes early because the alternative was to sit in my house freaking out about the potential data loss and possibility of needing to get a new computer and pay for data recovery - my end of year holiday budget about to go up in smoke. I sat there for only about 10 minutes before they called my name.

My Genius was friendly, understanding of my story about cats, and as she ran tests on my hard drive checked out my time machine to see when the latest backup was. Oh the joy when she revealed that the last backup was noon today. Only a handful of iPhone pics are lost but everything else is there or could be rebuilt at work tomorrow. And the here’s the awesome part…

She explained the repair and my options. They could overnight the repair on drive and have it back to me tomorrow. I asked about the separated casing and bump the prevented a solid close of the laptop. She said that they could fix it but it’d have to be sent out and it’d be a week. I could live with that if as I don’t plan on a new laptop of another 18 months and I’d prefer one that I couldn’t look inside or cut myself on until then. I resigned myself to the repair bill as she handed it over… I looked at it, all charges were cancelled out. They were waving the repair costs! “This is why I buy Apple!” I declared! She smiled and said it was a one time thing but not a problem as they don’t expect cats to take out a laptop too often.

So, because I went in prepared for a worse case scenario of buying a new laptop and left with my old one returning in tip top shape in a week, I treated myself to an iPod Nano and a desire to declare my love for Apple where ever I can.

Now to plot out how to repeat the work I did lose tomorrow morning, as tonight I’m just going to play games until I pleasantly fall asleep knowing my baby is in the warm and tender care of human beings.
